The most important thing to know about your rates is what they are comprised of. Here is the short version.
“Interchange” rates are a percentage of the volume for each credit card transaction. (78% of total processing cost)
“Assessment” fees are a flat transaction fee added to each transaction. Fees associated with Visa/MasterCard (4% of total processing cost)
“Processor Costs” are the fees that credit card processors charge for their services. (18% of total processing cost)
Interchange and Assessments are NON-NEGOTIABLE. They are set by Visa MasterCard and the Issuing Banks (bank that issued card to customer) and are the same for every business no matter what processor/merchant account provider they choose to use. Processor Costs are the only part of the cost which actually varies from provider to provider. What is PCI Compliance?Payment Card Industry (PCI) Compliance rules are designed to ensure that credit card numbers are not kept by merchants in a form that is easy to steal. To become compliant can be a complicated and expensive process, especially for online merchants. Most business owners have no idea what they have to do to meet the PCI compliance requirements.
However, there is good news. Payline has created a PCI Compliance Guide to help you understand how to develop a strategy that will work for your business.
In fact, most smaller businesses do not even require an audit if numbers are not stored. The easiest thing to do is pass the card info on to your gateway and let them store it. Most small to midsize businesses can achieve PCI compliance simply by filling out a self-assessment questionnaire-as long as they don’t store customer data.
The best way to achieve PCI compliance is simple: don’t store cardholder data.
